Transitions® VI finished lenses with “Super Hydrophobic” AR coating now available in hard resin

(TORRANCE, CA — June 2009)
Younger Optics has added hard resin to their new Transitions® VI finished lens line; Poly was introduced earlier this year. Both materials offer a “Super Hydrophobic” AR coating and are available in single vision gray and brown colors. The response from Laboratories has been very positive to these lenses with a high quality AR coating that can outperform many of the more costly coatings now on the market.

This AR’s hydrophobic properties allow water droplets to easily run off the surface of the lens without stains or streaks. These hydrophobic properties also help to remove smudges, dust, dirt and fingerprints, making the lenses easy to clean and maintain. Tests have shown this advanced coating is very durable, to resist scratching and peeling throughout the life of the lens.
The Super Hydrophobic AR on these finished lenses provides high transmission, to let more light through the lens and allow the wearer to see clearer, sharper images with the benefits of Transitions® VI Photochromic Technology. At the same time, the Super Hydrophobic AR prevents annoying reflections from coming off the wearer’s lenses, and has a pleasing, uniform reflected color.

Transitions® VI finished lenses with “Super Hydrophobic” AR coating are available now in hard resin and polycarbonate from Younger Optics.
Younger Optics is recognized as the world leader in prescription polarized lenses with its NuPolar® brand. Younger Optics partners with Transitions Optical to present the Drivewear seminar tour

(TORRANCE, CA — March 2009)
Younger Optics is teaming with Transitions Optical, Inc. to present seminars throughout the United States in a 21-city tour that will educate eyecare professionals about the benefits of Drivewear® lenses Activated by Transitions® and how they can increase sun lens sales.

The national Drivewear Seminar Tour kicked off February 24 in Arcadia, CA, and will end on May 5 in Homestead, PA. Each seminar begins with dinner and registration, followed by “The Glaring Truth”, a 20-minute presentation by Transitions Optical, which explores the different types of glare and the best eyewear solutions to address each one. Then Younger Optics will present a one-hour, ABO-approved seminar entitled “Drivewear, Accelerating Your Sun Lens Business”.
“Right now, second pair sales are more important than ever,” said David Rips, President, Younger Optics. “By simply offering sunwear as a second pair to every customer, ECP’s can literally double the size of their practice. Virtually every patient drives and can benefit from Drivewear. The driving task is influenced by many factors, including glare, and understanding how patients can benefit from Drivewear lenses is vital. We’re excited to partner with Transitions to bring this information to the industry while offering eyecare professionals tools to educate their patients and build their businesses.” As a special recognition for participation in the tour, Younger will provide each attendee with a certificate of completion, a complimentary voucher for a trial pair of Drivewear® lenses and a chance to win exciting prizes.

Eyecare professionals can get more information and register online at www.drivewearlens.com.

NuPolar® Polarized lens family grows with new High index 1.67

(TORRANCE, CA — March 2009)  NuPolar, the world’s most popular polarized RX lens, now brings the quality and features you have come to expect from NuPolar to the 1.67 market.

“The eyecare industry is aware of the many benefits of polarized lenses – that they remove glare and enhance visual acuity - but it’s also important to remember,” stresses David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics, “that not all polarized lenses are manufactured the same.  While other polarized lenses vary in quality and performance, NuPolar consistently outperforms other products in the marketplace.”

NuPolar 1.67 lenses are manufactured MR-10™ resin, a high performance material with good processing and stability characteristics.  NuPolar 1.67 is offered in five base curves with precise film placement to allow for minimum thickness over a wide Rx range, and is backed by all applicable NuPolar warranties.
NuPolar 1.67 lenses are manufactured with all the features that make NuPolar unique: excellent heat stability (even when subjected to the elevated temperatures encountered during many hard coating and A/R coating processes), superb adhesion characteristics ensuring the lenses will not delaminate or separate, consistent true curve control (perfect for today’s digitally processed free-form requirements), and high polarization efficiency.  NuPolar’s quality standards never allow your desired gray or brown colors to look too green or too blue, and NuPolar lenses are unrivaled in color uniformity, assuring consistent color matching.

NuPolar High Index 1.67 lenses are available now in single vision gray & brown.
With world headquarters in Torrance, CA, Younger Optics is recognized as the world leader in prescription polarized lenses with its NuPolar® brand.  For more information about Younger Optics, NuPolar lenses and other products, visit the company’s web site at www.youngeroptics.com, or call (800) 877-5367.

(TORRANCE, CA — March 2009) Younger Optics now offers Transitions® VI finished polycarbonate lenses with “Super Hydrophobic” AR coating in single vision gray and brown. Independent tests* have shown that this Super Hydrophobic AR outperforms many of the AR coatings in use today.

These hydrophobic properties also help to remove smudges, dust, dirt and fingerprints, making the lenses easy to clean and maintain. Extreme tests have shown this advanced coating is very durable, to resist scratching and peeling throughout the life of the lens.

New wallcharts and technical specification binders reflect increased availability and new product lines

(TORRANCE, CA — November 2008)
Younger Optics has recently made product reference easier and more convenient for their customers with the introduction of two documents – Updated Younger Optics Wallcharts and New Technical Specification binders. The updated wallchart reflects product lines that have grown considerably to include the new Image Wrap™ lens, NuPolar® copper and Green-15®, 1.67 High Index lenses, Flat Top 28 Trilogy® Transitions® lenses, Transitions® 1.60 High Index lenses, and odd base curve ranges throughout several product lines.
There’s even an entire new category of lens – Drivewear® lenses Activated by Transitions® (www.drivewearlens.com)! The wallchart, measuring 33.5 inches by 28 inches, is designed to be both functional and graphically appealing. The new technical specifications binder contains loose-leaf pages that can be removed and replaced when new products become available, and is large enough to accommodate additional literature and product materials. Like the wallchart, it is designed to be visually appealing as well as an easy and convenient reference point for all of Younger’s products. To obtain these new documents or to learn more about any of Younger Optics’ fine products, please feel free to contact your Younger Optics sales representative or the Younger Marketing Department by calling (800) 877-5367. Younger Optics expands Drivewear® line with Polycarbonate Image® progressive lenses

(TORRANCE, CA — September 2008)
Younger Optics has once again expanded the availability of their innovative line of sunlenses by introducing Drivewear® IMAGE® progressives in polycarbonate. “Without a doubt, since we released Drivewear lenses, the two biggest product requests have been for polycarbonate and for a progressive. In the past year, we’ve managed to fulfill both those requests, with Drivewear polycarbonate Single Vision and the Image lens in Hard Resin. Now, we’re bringing the two together with the new Polycarbonate Drivewear Image progressive,” said David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics. The award-winning IMAGE progressive has been rated favorably among recent independent studies. This is in part because IMAGE boasts one of the widest distortion free distance zones in the industry, a key advantage for the driving task. From the dashboard to the road ahead, IMAGE provides excellent viewing at near, far and intermediate distances, and can accommodate Rx ranges of -9D to +7D, with 1.00 – 3.00 add powers. And now, Drivewear progressive wearers can take advantage of the high impact resistance and higher index polycarbonate offers.
Drivewear lenses uniquely combine two of the most advanced technologies found in the eyeglass industry today: Transitions™ Photochromic Technology and NuPolar® polarization. Designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task, Drivewear Activated by Transitions® is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car which allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision. In addition, Drivewear lenses are polarized to block blinding glare, another essential attribute when driving a car. For more information and technical details, visit www.drivewearlens.com. Younger Optics is recognized as the world leader in prescription polarized lenses with its NuPolar® brand. First winner in Drivewear® sweepstakes announced

(TORRANCE, CA — May 2008)
A winner has been named in the first of two drawings for a Sony 52” LCD TV in the Drivewear consumer sweepstakes. Howard Geyer won the grand prize after registering the Drivewear® lenses Activated by Transitions® he purchased from Eye Desire in Miami Beach, Florida. Patients who purchase Drivewear, like Howard Geyer, can register their lenses by either returning the provided registration card or by registering their lenses online at www.drivewearlens.com.

Informative Owner’s Manuals that are distributed to the consumer with their purchase of Drivewear lenses are designed to thank the patient and to help them better understand the benefits and features of the product in friendly language. When patients return the included postcard to register their lenses (or register online), they receive a free gift from Younger Optics and are automatically entered into the Drivewear Sweepstakes drawings.
“My Drivewear lenses are fantastic,” said Howard Geyer, grand prize winner.  “I live in Florida and have used photochromic lenses before, but most of the photochromic lenses don't get dark enough in the heat of the Florida sun. That's why I love my Drivewear lenses, they get dark even when it's hot.  For anyone who wants a photochromic lens, Drivewear is it."

In addition to the LCD TV grand prize, Apple iPods were awarded to twenty other lucky Drivewear registrants. A second drawing for an LCD TV and twenty Apple iPods will take place this July.

Drivewear® lenses launched in Trinidad and Tobago

(TORRANCE, CA — February 2008)
Younger Optics teamed up with Value Optical during the weekend of January 25 – 26 to introduce consumers to Drivewear® lenses at the Premier Cinema and Mall on the island of Trinidad. The islands of Trinidad & Tobago in the southern Caribbean together occupy approximately 5000 sq km and have over 4000 km of roadways, with over 400,000 cars on the island’s network. The event promoted eye health and safety and educated drivers of all ages about the benefits of wearing the Drivewear lens. The booth attracted crowds by displaying a Porsche Cayman sports car and models sporting Drivewear lenses in Porsche frames.
“I only use polarized lenses for my sunglasses and the Drivewear lens meets and surpasses all my expectations of a premium sunglass lens,” said Ameer Ali, Optician and Lab Manager of Optex Laboratories, at the event. “Simply, this lens is fantastic and I will recommend it as one of two primary spectacle pairs for all my patients.”

Drivewear lenses uniquely combine two of the most advanced technologies found in the eyeglass industry today: Transitions™ Photochromic Technology and NuPolar® polarization. Designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task, Drivewear is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car which allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision. Younger Optics introduces Image Wrap™ in a decentered design

(TORRANCE, CA — January 2008) Younger Optics now offers their award-winning IMAGE® progressive in a new decentered design for steeply wrapped frames. Younger is launching the new IMAGE WRAP™ lens in polycarbonate NuPolar® Gray, a great choice for people with active lifestyles who typically wear sporty wrap frames.

David Rips, president and CEO of Younger Optics, explains the need for this new decentered design: “Standard progressive designs often do not offer enough lens material for wrap sunframes. As every laboratory technician knows, when the lens doesn’t “cut out,” it becomes a real headache for the laboratory and the doctor, as they must decide whether to change the frame or progressive lens style. Either way, it spells trouble that can result in lost business and a lot of aggravation for everyone… no one likes having to go back to the patient and tell them that they can’t have what they want. Younger now offers a better solution.”
Benefits of Decentered Design:

  • Available in +8 BC for “Wrap Frames”
  • Decentered 7mm to allow for maximum cut-out opportunity
  • An effective blank size of 83mm
  • No secondary calculations necessary for use
  • Great for narrow PD’s
  • Now the ability to match premium Image® NuPolar® Poly technology with today’s premium sunglass frames
  • No need to compromise technology and performance on Rx sunglasses due to cut-out issues
  • With one of the widest distance zones in the industry, the IMAGE progressive design is ideal for sunwear
Many of today’s progressive designs do not perform well as prescription sunwear. IMAGE was designed with sunwear in mind, with an emphasis on maintaining clear unobstructed distance vision. In a recent independent study, it was found that IMAGE had one of the widest distance zones of all the designs tested. NuPolar is the world’s most popular prescription polarized sunwear. Lightweight, thin and impact resistant, IMAGE NuPolar in polycarbonate can be a great choice for sports, active lifestyles, or when safety is your primary concern. Younger Optics is headquartered in Torrance, CA, and is recognized as the world leader in prescription polarized lenses with its NuPolar® brand. "Each year we evaluate all the tremendous new products brought to market,” said Des Taylor, NVI Senior Vice President.  “This year, for the first time, we were excited to launch a product that combined two outstanding technologies - NuPolar® polarizing technology and Transitions™ photochromic technology.  Drivewear has created a new lens category and has created tremendous new excitement within our company - we are pleased to partner with Younger Optics and honor them with the Best New Product Award at NVI.”

Jotinderpal “Sid” Sidhu, Younger Optics Vice President, said, “We wish to thank NVI for this great honor. We too are pleased to partner with NVI and bring to market a whole new lens category: Drivewear.”
Designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task, Drivewear is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car. This allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision. And since Drivewear lenses are Activated by Transitions™, wearers can be assured that their lenses are enhanced with superior and patented Transitions™ Photochromic Technology to automatically optimize visual performance in variable light conditions and to help protect eye health. Drivewear lenses also utilize NuPolar, the world’s leading polarized Rx technology, to provide protection from blinding glare.

Services for Younger Optics Founder Irving Rips, passes on at 79

(TORRANCE, CA — July 2007)
Irving Rips, founder of Younger Optics, passed away Monday morning, July 30th. Irving was born on November 1st 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended Creighton University where he studied philosophy. Irving got started in the optical industry at a very early age by fusing glass bifocals in his uncle’s factory.

In 1954, Irving had a better idea; He wanted to design a bifocal without the line. Months of hard work in his garage yielded the world’s first seamless bifocal. This lens made people look “Younger”. Younger Optics was formed in 1955 to make the lens that set the stage for many innovations to follow. Irving continued to invent a series of new products that the industry had not seen before.
Early aspherics, progressives, high index, UV lenses, and other unique plastic lens products all resulted from Irving’s extraordinary creativity and determination. In recognition of Irving’s contributions to the optical industry he was awarded the OLA lifetime achievement award in 1992.

As Younger Optics has grown from those early years into a very successful corporation, Irving continued to innovate and help the staff wherever he could. His life was filled with the quest for knowledge. He collected rare books, read everything he could, and applied the knowledge in unpredictable ways. Irving set a standard for innovation and determination that will live on at Younger.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace (Bebe) Rips and three children, Ted, David, and Debby, and 8 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Mount Sinai Cemetery 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 1st at 11:00am.

Younger Optics is headquartered in Torrance, CA, and is recognized as the world leader in prescription polarized lenses with its NuPolar brand.

Drivewear® wins top award at BRNO optical trade fair

(CZECH REPUBLIC, EUROPE — March 2007) Younger Optics has been recognized as a leader in lens innovation, technology and creativity at the 13th International Fair for Eye Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology held in the Czech Republic February 23-25 this year. Younger’s Drivewear® exhibit was honored with the top award in the “spectacle lens” category (producer Younger Optics, exhibitor Omega Optix). Drivewear is a revolutionary new lens made possible through the cooperation of Younger Optics (manufacturer of NuPolar® Polarized Lenses) and Transitions Optical, Inc. and designed specifically to address the unique demands of the driving task.

“We are honored to receive this award, and I am very proud of our development team for gaining this accomplishment,” said Igor Loshak, Managing Director of Younger Optics Europe. “Drivewear is one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in our industry – we really created a whole new category in lenses. I believe the new technology that Drivewear brings will change the way patients wear ophthalmic lenses by allowing them to use a single ophthalmic sun lens in more situations than is now possible.”
The TOP OPTA Competition awards one product as “best exhibit” in each of the following categories: spectacle lenses, contact lenses, frames (including sunglasses), and equipment and technologies for eye optics and ophthalmology. The competition is held in the BRNO Exhibition Centre at the OPTA International Fair, which prides itself in not just presenting the top fashion spectacle frames, glasses and contact lenses, or technology and equipment, but also in serving as a centre of education, offering numerous specialized lectures and seminars for optical professionals. The OPTA International Fair had 222 exhibitors and 19 participating countries last year.
